Wellborn Kitchen Remodeling: The Austin Owner’s Guide
If you have Wellborn cabinetry in your Austin kitchen and something has failed, a hinge, a drawer glide, a door that won’t close, or a cabinet box that’s pulled away from the wall, we stock Wellborn-compatible replacement parts on our trucks and install them for a typical cost of $250 to $900 depending on the part and the number of cabinets affected. Most hinge and glide replacements are done same day since we carry the common Wellborn hinge styles, Blums, Grass, and Salice, in three overlay depths. You’ll usually notice the failure the same way every homeowner does: a drawer starts grinding when you open it, a door hangs crooked and catches on the frame, or a soft-close feature stops catching and the door slams.
We’re an independent remodeling contractor in Austin, not a Wellborn dealer. That matters because we don’t push you toward a full gut-out when a $12 hinge and thirty minutes of labor fixes the problem. But if the cabinet face frame has cracked, the box has swollen from a dishwasher leak, or the finish is peeling off in sheets from Texas humidity, the honest answer might be a partial cabinet replacement, and we’ll tell you that on the first visit.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn has been running cabinet lines out of Ashland, Alabama since 1961, and Austin homes built from the 1990s through today carry their work in a lot of kitchens. The lines you’ll see most in this market: Wellborn Estate (their full-overlay, semi-custom), Wellborn Premier (mid-range, standard overlays), Wellborn Select (entry line, frameless in some runs), and Wellborn Cabinet Essentials (their ready-to-assemble line that shows up in newer builds and flips). If your cabinets came with a Wellborn sticker inside the sink base door, it’ll say which series, the door style, and the finish code, and that code is what we use to match parts.
The compatibility gotcha with Wellborn specifically: their hinge bore spacing changed between the Estate and Select lines in the early 2010s, so a hinge from a 2008 Select cabinet will not fit a 2016 Estate door without drilling new cup holes. That’s the number one mistake we see when homeowners try to order parts online. We match hinge style, cup diameter (35mm on most Wellborn doors, but 26mm on some older Select runs), and overlay depth before we even quote. For drawer glides, Wellborn used side-mount epoxy slides through the mid-2000s, then switched to undermount soft-close slides on Premier and Estate. They are not interchangeable, and forcing one into the other ruins the drawer box.
One more Austin-specific reality: Wellborn doors with a painted finish, especially whites and light grays, show hairline cracks along the center panel edges within eight to ten years in our climate. It’s the humidity swings. The wood expands, the paint film doesn’t, and the joint telegraphs through. That’s not a defect, it’s physics, and it’s repairable with a proper re-spray or a panel replacement, not something you need a full new kitchen to solve.

Signs Your Wellborn Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- The soft-close feature stopped working and the drawer slams shut. This is almost always a failed damper inside the glide or hinge. On Wellborn undermount glides, the damper piston wears out around year eight to ten of daily use. The glide can often be rebuilt with a replacement damper instead of swapping the whole slide.
- A cabinet door hangs lower on one side and scrapes the door below it. The hinge is bending at the knuckle, not the plate, and that’s a material failure. Wellborn doors are solid hardwood face frames with MDF center panels on painted lines, and the hinge carries more weight than people think. Once the knuckle deforms, no amount of screw tightening fixes it.
- The drawer front has separated from the drawer box. This is a glue joint failure, commonly on Wellborn Select and Cabinet Essentials lines where the front is attached with a dowel-and-glue joint rather than a mechanical fastener. Austin’s dry heat in summer bakes the glue, and a heavy pot drawer finishes the job. We can re-bond and clamp it, or rebuild the drawer box if the sides have split.
- The cabinet box has pulled away from the wall and the countertop now has a visible gap. This is a mounting failure, not a cabinet failure. In Austin homes on pier-and-beam foundations, especially in Bouldin Creek and Zilker, the house settles and the cabinet run shifts with it. The fix is re-securing the box to the studs and re-shimming, not replacing cabinets.
- The finish is peeling or chipping off the door edges near the sink and dishwasher. This is a moisture ingress problem. Wellborn’s painted finish is durable, but repeated steam from the dishwasher vent attacks the bottom rail edges. Once water gets under the paint film, it delaminates. We refinish door edges and seal the exposed MDF, and we’ll also check how you can redirect the steam.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Wellborn-compatible kitchen remodeling work costs in Austin, installed, including the part and our labor:
- Single hinge replacement: $40 to $120, depending on hinge type and whether it’s one door or several.
- Full drawer glide replacement (one drawer): $60 to $180, including removal, fitting, and alignment.
- Door re-hang and alignment (full kitchen): $200 to $500, including new hinge screws, shims, and adjustment of every door and drawer front.
- Drawer box rebuild or front re-attachment: $150 to $400 per drawer, depending on wood species and finish.
- Cabinet box re-secure to wall: $300 to $800, including stud anchoring, shimming, and re-sealing the countertop joint.
- Full kitchen remodel with Wellborn-compatible cabinetry installed: $14,000 to $45,000 for a typical Austin kitchen, which includes demolition, cabinetry, countertops, backsplash, plumbing, and electrical.
The range swings on three things: how many cabinets we’re touching, whether the Wellborn line is still in production (Select and Cabinet Essentials parts are widely available; some Estate door styles have been discontinued and require custom matching), and whether the damage is isolated or systemic. Every quote we give in Austin is a written, line-item price before any work starts. The number you approve is the number on the invoice. We also back every repair with a written guarantee, and if the repair fails within the covered period, the second visit is free.
We stock the common Wellborn hinge styles, undermount soft-close glide kits, door bumpers, and touch-up kits on the truck. If your part is uncommon, we order it and are usually back within a week.
DIY or Call Us?
Some Wellborn cabinet repairs are genuinely safe to try yourself. Adjusting a hinge screw to re-level a door, replacing a magnetic catch, re-softening a close with a screwdriver adjustment: these are all doable in an afternoon if you have a Phillips head and patience. Matching a hinge bore pattern, rebuilding a drawer box, or re-securing a cabinet run to the wall is where DIY goes sideways. If the cabinet box pulls away from the wall, that’s structural load, and if it lets go while you’re not looking, the countertop and everything on it comes with it. That’s not a weekend project.
If you’re not sure which category your problem falls into, call us at (409) 834-4854. We’ll talk you through what you’re seeing, tell you if it’s something you can fix with a screwdriver, and if it’s not, we’ll set up a visit. FAQs

Wellborn cabinet boxes and face frames typically last 25 to 40 years in Austin homes, but hardware, hinges and glides, typically needs replacement every 10 to 15 years. The cabinet structure outlives the moving parts. Call (409) 834-4854 and we can assess your specific setup.
Yes, most Wellborn failures are repairable, hinges, glides, drawer fronts, finish peeling, and loose boxes can be fixed without replacing the cabinet. Replacement only makes sense when the cabinet box itself has water damage, cracked face frames, or structural rot. If you’re not sure, call (409) 834-4854 for a free evaluation.
A hinge or glide replacement on a single Wellborn cabinet takes 30 to 90 minutes. Aligning every door and drawer in a full kitchen typically takes two to four hours. A cabinet box re-secure runs half a day. We’ll give you the exact time window in the written quote. Schedule a free estimate at (409) 834-4854.
