Wellborn Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide
If you’ve got a Wellborn paver driveway that’s sinking, cracking, or shifting, the fix usually comes down to the base layer underneath, not the pavers themselves. In Austin, we install and repair Wellborn-compatible driveway pavers for $7,000 – $18,000 on full replacements, with targeted repair work running significantly less depending on how many pavers need pulling and resetting. Most Austin homeowners first notice the problem after a heavy rain when one corner drops half an inch, or when a paver rocks underfoot near the garage apron.
The clay-heavy soil across Austin expands and contracts hard through our wet-dry cycles, and that movement is what breaks down paver driveways faster than anything else. You’ll see it first at the edges, where water pools against the curb or the house slab.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Here’s the thing about Wellborn and driveway pavers: Wellborn is a cabinetry brand, not a paver manufacturer. What you’re likely holding is a Wellborn home plan or spec sheet that called for a paver driveway as part of the build, or a Wellborn remodeling project where the driveway was included in the scope. Either way, the paver product itself is typically a concrete interlocking paver from manufacturers like Belgard, Unilock, or Pavestone, installed to Wellborn’s spec.
The compatibility question that matters is paver size and thickness. Driveway pavers need to be at least 60mm thick, sometimes 80mm for heavier vehicles or poor Austin soil. Patio pavers are thinner, around 40 – 50mm, and they will crack under vehicle load. If someone installed patio-grade pavers on your driveway to save money, that’s your failure point right there.
We’re an independent Austin service provider, not affiliated with Wellborn. If you’ve got the original build documents, check for the paver manufacturer and size. If you don’t, we can measure on-site and match the profile.
One more compatibility gotcha: paver color lots shift over time. A repair done with the same paver name but a different production lot can show a visible color difference. We pull from the existing driveway where possible and blend newer pavers into less visible areas.

Signs Your Wellborn Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
Here’s what we see most often on Austin paver driveways:
- Sunken or dipped pavers near the curb or garage. This is base failure. Water got under the pavers, washed out the sand or crushed stone, and the pavers dropped into the void. In Austin, this usually happens after a drought shrinks the clay and then a storm fills the gap.
- Rocking or shifting pavers when you walk or drive on them. The bedding sand beneath has migrated or washed away. A paver that moves means the interlock is broken, and the load now sits on individual pavers instead of the whole mat. Left alone, the edges will chip and crack.
- Weeds or ants pushing up from between joints. Weeds mean the joint sand is gone and organic matter has taken hold. Ants excavate the bedding sand and create voids. Either one is a sign the joints have failed and water is getting underneath.
- Standing water that sits on the driveway for more than 30 minutes after rain. This means the slope has flattened out or reversed. Austin’s flat lots, especially in Bouldin Creek and the east side, are prone to this. Water that pools on pavers eventually works into the base and freezes the cycle of damage.
- Cracked or spalled paver surfaces. Concrete pavers absorb water, and when they bake in Austin’s 100-degree summers and then cool fast, the surface can pop or flake. It’s usually a paver quality issue or an age issue, not a base issue, but those broken units still need replacing.
If you’re seeing one of these, call us at (409) 834-4854. A quick on-site look tells us whether you need a few pavers reset or a full base rebuild, and we’ll give you a written price either way.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Austin, here’s the real pricing picture:
- Paver driveway replacement (full): $7,000 – $18,000 installed, depending on square footage, access, and whether we’re hauling out the old base or working over it.
- Targeted paver repair (reset a sunken section): $400 – $2,500, depending on how many square feet and how deep the base damage goes.
- Paver driveway sealing: $250 – $700 for an average Austin driveway. Sealing doesn’t fix a bad base, but it slows water absorption and color fade.
A full replacement includes tear-out of the old pavers and base, new crushed stone base compacted in lifts, bedding sand, the pavers themselves, edge restraints, joint sand, and haul-away. We don’t quote a bare paver price and then add “discovered conditions” at the end. The written price we hand you before work starts is the price on the invoice. That’s the Relay Visibility Guarantee, and it applies to every driveway job we run in Austin.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely reset a single rocking paver yourself. Pull it, add a little sand, level it, tap it back down, sweep sand into the joints. If that’s all you’ve got, you don’t need us.
Here’s where DIY goes sideways: sunken sections. When a whole area drops, the base underneath is gone, and adding sand on top doesn’t fix that. You need to pull the pavers, rebuild the compacted stone base, and re-set the pavers with a plate compactor. That’s real labor, and doing it wrong means you’re doing it again in 18 months when the next rain washes through. The compactor rental alone runs you $80 – $120 a day in Austin, and you still need to haul the stone.
If you’re not sure which situation you have, call us at (409) 834-4854. We’ll look, tell you straight, and give you a written price. If it’s the one-paver fix, we’ll tell you to do it yourself and save the money. Measure twice, cut once, then we actually build the thing.
FAQs

How long should a paver driveway last in Austin?
A properly built paver driveway on a compacted stone base will last 25 – 30 years in Austin, with the pavers themselves often outlasting that. What fails first is the base, not the paver. The Austin freeze-thaw cycle is mild, but our clay soil movement and intense summer heat are hard on the base layer, especially if the original install skimped on stone depth. If you’re replacing a driveway that only made it a decade, the base was almost certainly the problem. Call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll confirm what’s under there before quoting a fix.
Can sunken pavers be repaired instead of replacing the whole driveway?
In most cases, yes. We pull the sunken section, rebuild the base under that area only, and re-lay the same pavers. The catch is color matching: if we need replacement pavers from a new lot, they won’t be a perfect match. We handle that by pulling existing pavers from less visible areas to use in the patched section and placing the new ones where you won’t notice. Get a free estimate at (409) 834-4854.
How long does a paver driveway repair or replacement take?
A targeted repair of one sunken section is a one-to-two-day job for our crew. A full driveway replacement in Austin typically runs three to five working days, which includes base excavation, compaction, paver laying, cutting, and joint sand. Weather delays happen, but we don’t stretch projects with no-shows. You’ll get live arrival times and photo updates through the whole thing under the Relay Visibility Guarantee.
Do you keep Wellborn driveway pavers in stock?
We don’t stock full paver pallets in a warehouse, because the size, color, and thickness have to match your existing driveway. What we do is source through our paver supply partners in Austin, including the big three manufacturers you’ll find on most Wellborn spec sheets: Belgard, Unilock, and Pavestone. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone on the interior side, but for driveway pavers, it’s Belgard or equivalent. We can usually get the right paver profile to your Austin driveway site within a week. Call (409) 834-4854 with your paver size and color if you have it, and we’ll track it down.
