Schluter Kitchen Remodeling: The Austin Owner’s Guide

Schluter kitchen remodeling in Austin typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 installed, depending on whether we’re waterproofing a backsplash zone, rebuilding a failed shower-to-kitchen transition, or gutting the whole room down to studs. Most Schluter-related failures we see in Austin kitchens aren’t the Schluter products themselves, they’re the substrate or installation behind them. If you’ve got cracked tile, a spongy counter edge, or water staining at the floor line, the fix usually means opening up the Schluter membrane or edging system and rebuilding that section properly.

We’re Sawyer Remodel Austin, and we work with Schluter systems on kitchen remodels across Austin every month. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with Schluter, but we know their product line cold: KERDI waterproofing membrane, DITRA uncoupling underlayment, KERDI-BAND seams, and the full line of Schluter edge trims. If your Schluter install is failing, we can tell you whether it’s a product mismatch, an install error, or just age, and what it’ll cost to make it right.

Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter doesn’t make “kitchen remodeling” as a single product. What homeowners mean is usually one of three things: KERDI membrane used behind backsplash tile or under a kitchen floor transition, DITRA underlayment under tile that’s now cracking or flexing, or Schluter metal edge trim (the aluminum or stainless strip that caps tile edges and protects the transition where tile meets floor, countertop, or drywall). Each has different failure modes and different repair costs.

The compatibility gotcha with Schluter is this: KERDI and DITRA are not interchangeable. KERDI is waterproofing, DITRA is uncoupling and load distribution. If a previous contractor used DITRA where the kitchen needed waterproofing (common near sinks, dishwashers, and exterior walls in Austin’s humid climate), water gets through and rots the subfloor. That’s a full tear-out, not a patch. We’ve also seen homeowners buy Schluter edge trim off the shelf in the wrong profile, then the tile edge chips because the trim’s anchoring leg was too short for the tile thickness. Measure your tile thickness, check the trim’s profile height, and if the numbers don’t line up, that’s the problem.

For aftermarket Schluter-compatible trim, you’ll find cheaper imports that look similar but have thinner aluminum walls and weaker anchoring legs. In Austin kitchens with heavy foot traffic, those bend and fail within a couple years. We specify genuine Schluter trim for anything load-bearing at the floor line, and we’ll say so on the estimate so you know what you’re paying for.

Signs Your Schluter Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Grout cracking along the floor-to-wall joint in a straight line. This usually means the Schluter trim or DITRA membrane isn’t absorbing movement the way it should. The subfloor flexes with Austin’s seasonal humidity swings, and the tile has nowhere to go.
  • Water staining on the cabinet toe-kick below the sink. KERDI only fails if the seams weren’t properly overlapped and bonded with KERDI-BAND. A 2-inch seam overlap is code; a 1-inch overlap is a slow leak that shows up months later.
  • A spongy or flexing tile near the dishwasher or sink. That’s subfloor rot, most often from a dishwasher that leaked behind the KERDI layer where there was no KERDI. The membrane can’t waterproof what it wasn’t installed under.
  • Schluter edge trim lifting or separating from the tile edge. The anchoring leg was either not set in thinset properly or the thinset skinned over before the trim went in. Once it lifts, it catches socks, mops, and eventually bends.
  • Hollow-sounding tile in a kitchen that was “waterproofed.” Thinset didn’t bond to the KERDI fleece. Someone troweled it too thin, let it dry, or didn’t back-butter. The fix is opening it up and redoing the bond layer.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

An open kitchen and dining area after a remodel

The lead range for Schluter kitchen remodeling in Austin is $14,000 – $45,000, but if you’re reading this because a specific part failed, you’re probably looking at a section repair, not a full remodel. Here’s how the numbers break down in Austin:

Scope Austin Price Range
Full kitchen remodel (Schluter-waterproofed, new tile, trim) $14,000 – $45,000
Small kitchen remodel $9,000 – $20,000
Backsplash replacement (removal, KERDI, tile, Schluter trim) $800 – $2,500
DITRA underlayment repair (section) $400 – $1,800
Schluter edge trim replacement (one wall, floor line) $300 – $1,200

Every number above includes parts, labor, and disposal. What drives the range: tile size and material, whether we’re replacing a failed underlayment versus a full membrane system, and how much substrate repair is needed once we open it up. You get a written line-item price before any tool is picked up, so the number you approve is the number on the invoice. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers our Schluter work for a full year: if it fails because of our install, we come back and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can absolutely inspect your own Schluter trim with a flashlight and a straight edge. Check whether the trim’s anchoring leg is still embedded in thinset, whether the profile sits flat against the tile edge, and whether there’s any movement when you press on it. What you shouldn’t do is pull up a failed DITRA or KERDI section yourself. Once you start lifting tile and membrane, you’re into thinset dust, possible subfloor rot, and the very real chance of cracking adjacent tiles that were fine.

And honestly, matching Schluter trim profile and finish after the fact is a pain. The profile numbers are printed on the trim’s anchoring leg, but if that’s damaged or the trim was cut short, you’re guessing. We carry the common profiles on the truck and can usually match what’s there. If you’re in Austin and the tile’s already failing, call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll come look before you’re three trips deep at a tile supply house.
