GAF Roofing: The Austin Owner’s Guide
We stock and install GAF-compatible roofing, shingles, and replacement parts across Austin, with typical installed repair prices running $400 – $1,800 depending on what failed and how much decking is involved. Most GAF roof repairs in Austin are done in a single visit, and we carry Timberline HDZ, Timberline UHDZ, and Royal Sovereign materials on the truck for common jobs. The way owners usually find us: a leak shows up after a March hailstorm, or a few shingles tear off during a July gust front rolling through Tarrytown, and suddenly there’s a water spot blooming on the ceiling drywall. You call because you need the right GAF part matched to the right roof before the next storm does more damage.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
Most Austin roofs we work on wear GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles, the company’s workhorse series. But we also see plenty of Timberline UHDZ on newer builds in Mueller and East Austin, plus the occasional Royal Sovereign 3-tab roof on older homes in Hyde Park and Bouldin Creek. The part that fails determines the fix: a torn shingle is one thing, but failed sealant strips on a 12-year-old HDZ roof often mean broad shingle replacement, not a patch. GAF’s shingle size is 13 1/4 inches by 39 3/8 inches, with a 5 5/8-inch exposure on Timberline architectural lines. If you’re checking a shingle yourself, look for the GAF logo stamped on the underside or the model name printed on the bundle wrapper in the attic or garage. We match OEM GAF parts first, but on discontinued colorways we’ll use a quality aftermarket equivalent only if the color match holds and the warranty math still works in your favor. A mismatch on a visible roof slope looks wrong for years, and we won’t do that to you.

Signs Your GAF Roofing Is Failing
- Granules collecting in gutters or at downspout exits. GAF shingles shed granules as the asphalt layer ages. If you’re seeing a half-cup of granules after every rain, the shingles are past midlife and the fiberglass mat beneath is losing protection. In Austin’s UV-heavy summers, this shows up faster than the warranty date suggests.
- Shingles curling at the edges or corners. This is usually heat-driven drying of the asphalt, and south-facing roof slopes in Austin get it worst. Curled shingles catch wind easily. Once wind gets under them, you get creased shingles, then torn shingles, then leaks.
- A “bald” patch where the granule layer is gone completely. The shingle underneath looks smooth and black or gray. Hail does this in Austin more often than people think. A March or April hailstorm can strip granules while leaving the shingle in place, and that shingle no longer sheds water correctly.
- Sealant strip failure causing shingles to lift in a gust. GAF shingles rely on a thermal sealant strip to bond each course to the one below. Once that sealant fails, wind gets under the bottom edge and flutters the shingle until it cracks. Homes in the Hill Country corridors southeast of Austin get this all the time.
- Water stains on ceiling drywall or around bathroom vents. By the time the stain shows indoors, water has already traveled through the shingle, underlayment, and decking. The GAF part that failed might be a shingle, a pipe boot, or a vent flashing. The decking beneath may need repair too, which changes the price.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
GAF roof repair in Austin runs $400 – $1,800 as an installed range. A single shingle replacement or nail-pop fix sits at the low end. A torn section after a storm, with underlayment patched and nearby shingles resealed, lands mid-range. Replacing a failed GAF roof on a full home in Austin runs $8,000 – $20,000, which covers tear-off of the old shingles, decking repair where needed, new GAF underlayment and shingles, flashing at all penetrations, and a built-in escalation clause if Austin code requires changes once the decking is open. The biggest price driver is decking condition. Austin’s heat bakes old wood decking into brittle sheets, and wet decking from a long-running leak means replacement before new shingles go down, not after. We write the price before work starts, and the number on the invoice matches what you approved. No change orders without a conversation first.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: count the granule buildup in your gutters, look for shingles that lift when the wind gusts, and check the attic for daylight poking through the decking. What you shouldn’t do is climb onto a roof in Austin in the middle of summer. The shingle surface gets hot enough to burn skin on contact, and a fall from a roof edge is a life-changing injury. We’ve also watched DIY patch jobs create worse leaks because the wrong sealant was used or the shingle wasn’t nailed in the right nail line. If you want to know what you’re working with before you call, text us a photo of the damage and we’ll tell you if it’s a wait-and-watch or a fix-now situation. For anything past that, call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll put eyes on it properly.
FAQs

Plan on 18 to 25 years for a GAF Timberline HDZ roof in Austin, not the 30+ year figure you’ll see on the warranty card. Austin’s UV index and summer heat cycles age shingles faster than the national average. A roof with ideal ventilation and shade can push toward 28 years. A south-facing roof with poor attic ventilation may need replacement at 16 years.
A single torn or creased shingle can usually be replaced in under an hour for the low end of our repair range. But when the sealant strips have failed across an entire roof slope, repairing one shingle is throwing money away. The slope will keep failing shingle by shingle. We’ll tell you honestly which situation you’re in.
Single shingle replacements and flash repairs take an hour or two on-site. A full roof replacement in Austin runs one to three days depending on roof complexity, decking repair, and weather. Steep pitch roofs, valleys, and skylights add time.
Our trucks carry the most common GAF Timberline HDZ and UHDZ shingle colors in Austin, plus standard flashing boots, ridge cap, and underlayment. Oddball colors or discontinued series take a day or two to source from local GAF distributors in the Austin area. Call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll tell you exactly what we have on hand for your model before we schedule.
Only if the decking underneath is rotted or water-damaged and needs replacement beyond the original scope. Austin code requires us to flag that, show you photos, and get approval before the extra work is done. The price we put in writing before we start is the price you pay unless we agree on a change together.
If your GAF roof is showing any of the signs above, or you just want a trained pair of eyes on it before the next storm season, call (409) 834-4854 for a free estimate. We’ll match your GAF part, give you a written price, and show you exactly what’s going on before we touch a single shingle.
