PGT Bathroom Remodeling: The Austin Owner’s Guide
A full PGT bathroom remodel in Austin typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on whether you’re refreshing a powder room or gutting a master bath down to the studs. We stock PGT-compatible shower glass, hardware, and replacement parts, and our crew can usually start within two weeks of your written estimate. Most Austin homeowners call us because a PGT shower door has started sagging, a hinge is corroded from hard water, or the original install wasn’t flashed properly and now there’s water damage hiding behind the tile.
Sawyer Remodel Austin is an independent remodeling contractor, not a PGT dealer or affiliate. That matters because we’re not here to push one product line; we’re here to fix what’s failing and build what lasts in Austin’s climate.
Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT’s bathroom product lines show up in Austin homes built after about 2010, particularly in newer subdivisions around Circle C, Mueller, and Easton Park. The most common PGT shower enclosures we work on are the frameless and semi-frameless series, where compatibility hinges on two things: glass thickness and hinge placement. PGT frameless doors are typically 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch tempered glass, and the hinge hardware is specific to that thickness. A 3/8-inch hinge will not safely hold a 1/2-inch panel, and mixing them is how you end up with a door that drops and shatters against the curb.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for PGT specifically: we’ll use PGT hardware when the door is under warranty or when matching existing finishes matters, but for out-of-warranty failures we often recommend aftermarket hinges and rollers from brands like CRL or Prime-Line. These swap in cleanly, cost 30 to 50 percent less, and in Austin’s hard water they often hold up better than the original coated zinc hardware. The real compatibility gotcha with PGT enclosures is roller wheel diameter on bypass doors. PGT used both 1-inch and 1-1/4-inch roller wheels across different production years, and the track extrusion is not interchangeable. If your door drags or jumps the track, you don’t need a new door; you need the right wheel measured with calipers, not guessed.
We also do full PGT bathroom remodels where the existing unit comes out entirely. The brand still matters because the width and header design of the original enclosure dictate what can go back in without reframing the opening.

Signs Your PGT Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Sagging door that scrapes the threshold or curb. This usually means the top hinge has worked loose or the glass was never shimmed level during the original install. Every scrape is wearing down the gasket and eventually the glass edge itself.
- White crust or green corrosion around hinges and handles. Austin’s water runs hard, and PGT’s factory hardware isn’t always sealed against it. Once the chrome or brushed nickel plating is compromised, the underlying zinc rots and the hinge binds or snaps.
- Water staining or soft drywall at the base of the shower curb. The enclosure can look perfect while the pan liner underneath has failed. We’ve opened up showers in Bouldin Creek homes where the PGT glass was fine but the original waterproofing was doing nothing.
- Sliding door jumping the track or binding mid-travel. That’s the roller wheel diameter issue. Forcing it wears a flat spot on the wheel, grooves the aluminum track, and turns a $40 part into a $400 track replacement.
- Grout cracking or tile movement in the surround. Austin’s clay soil shifts. If the shower pan moves even a little, the PGT enclosure’s mounting tolerances get thrown off, and the door binds no matter how many times you adjust the hinges.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For PGT-specific bathroom work in Austin, here’s the honest math we give on the phone before we ever step inside:
- Hardware replacement (hinges, rollers, handles, seals): $150 – $650 installed per unit, parts and labor included.
- Shower door glass replacement (3/8-inch tempered, PGT-compatible): $1,200 – $3,500 depending on door size and hardware reuse.
- Full PGT enclosure replacement framed or semi-frameless: $3,000 – $8,500 installed.
- Complete bathroom remodel around the PGT unit (tile, waterproofing, pan, fixtures): $9,000 – $28,000, which is the lead range for this page.
What drives the spread is the same in every Austin neighborhood from Hyde Park to Steiner Ranch: whether you’re keeping the existing pan and drain locations, how much tile is coming out, and whether we find water damage once demo starts. Our written price covers the work we can see, and if we open a wall and find rot, we stop and show you photos before another dollar is spent. That’s The Relay Visibility Guarantee at work: photo updates before and after, a live arrival time, and a price that doesn’t creep because someone forgot to quote a permit.
Every PGT bathroom remodel from us carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s not done right, we make it right within a year. No argument, no invoice gymnastics.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely handle a few things on a PGT bathroom fixture: tightening a loose handle set screw with the right hex key, cleaning mineral buildup from the track with vinegar, or replacing a worn vinyl sweep on the bottom of a swinging door. Those are five-minute jobs with no risk to glass or structure.
Where DIY goes sideways is hinge replacement, roller wheel swaps, and anything involving tempered glass panels. A PGT frameless door can weigh 80 to 110 pounds. If it shifts while you’re backing out the top hinge, you’re dealing with a falling panel that shatters into thousands of square-edged pieces in a confined space. Tempered glass is safe when it breaks, but getting hit by it isn’t. And the glass usually gets scratched or chipped during amateur installs, which voids any replacement warranty. We’d rather walk you through the track-cleaning over the phone for free than charge you $800 to fix a door that got dropped. But when it’s beyond cleaning, call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll schedule the repair with a real arrival time, not a four-hour window.
FAQs

Fifteen to twenty years for the glass itself, but the hardware typically fails in 8 to 12 years in Austin because of hard water mineral exposure and humidity. We see roller wheels and hinge barrels go first, and those are replaceable without pulling the whole enclosure.
Usually yes. Sagging hinges, worn rollers, corroded handles, and failed seals are all repairable for a few hundred dollars. We only recommend full replacement when the glass is scratched or etched beyond restoration, or when the original install left the pan leaking. Call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll tell you honestly which path applies before you spend anything.
A full gut-and-rebuild runs 3 to 6 weeks depending on tile work and whether we’re moving plumbing. A hardware or door replacement is a half-day job. We’ll give you a written schedule with a start date and a finish date before the first tool comes off the truck.
We run standard 1-inch and 1-1/4-inch roller wheels, common hinge sets, handle pairs, and vinyl sweeps on our Austin service trucks. Oddball or finish-matched PGT hardware is usually at our supplier next morning. The brands you’ll find in our warehouse alongside PGT-compatible inventory include KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for the surrounding remodel work.
