CGI Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide
CGI driveway and paver parts are stocked in our Austin shop, and most replacements are installed for $7,000 – $18,000 depending on driveway size, paver style, and what’s underneath the surface. We carry CGI-compatible edge restraints, polymeric sand, base panels, and replacement pavers matched to your existing color and profile, and most parts are ready within one or two business days. Owners usually discover a problem when they see a sunken area after a hard rain, a paver that’s cracked at the edge, or sand washing out along the driveway seams.
If the driveway is heaving, cracking, or draining wrong, the part that failed is rarely just the paver itself. It’s usually what’s under it or what’s holding it in place. That’s the difference between a driveway that lasts 20 years in Austin clay and one that needs releveling every spring.
Which CGI Models This Applies To

CGI (Concrete Grid Innovations) pavers come in a few distinct lines, and the replacement part you need depends on which one is in your driveway. The most common in Austin are the 2-inch-thick interlocking pavers used for residential driveways, the 3-inch permeable pavers for water-draining applications, and the heavy-load commercial units rated for trucks and heavier traffic. The profile dimensions matter: CGI’s residential pavers typically run 4×8 inches, 8×8 inches, and 12×12 inches with a 2-inch bed depth, but some newer installs use the 60mm system that doesn’t mix well with the older 50mm units.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: you can’t always pull a paver from one part of your driveway and swap it with a newer CGI batch and expect it to sit flush. Slight mold changes between production years mean the new paver’s chamfer or bottom lug pattern can sit a few millimeters proud. That’s why we always ask for a photo of the existing paver’s underside before we order. If the underside shows a grid pattern of small posts, that’s the newer mold. If it’s smooth with two runner bars, it’s the older series. OEM CGI parts are the safest match for color and texture; quality aftermarket equivalents from Techo-Bloc and Unilock can work for edge restraints and base panels, but we recommend OEM for the pavers themselves.
Sawyer Remodel Austin is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with CGI. We stock CGI-compatible parts because Austin driveways built with them are common, and homeowners shouldn’t have to hunt down a specialty supplier.

Signs Your CGI Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Paver edges chipping or spalling. This usually means the pavers are overstressed at the edges, often because the edge restraint has loosened and the pavers are shifting sideways under vehicle weight.
- Sunken or rutted areas. Austin’s clay soil expands and contracts with moisture, and if the base wasn’t compacted properly or water has washed the sand out, the pavers drop along the tire lanes first.
- Sand washing out between joints. If you’re seeing poly sand running down the driveway after every rain, the joint sand has failed and the pavers will start moving within months.
- Standing water that wasn’t there before. A properly sloped paver driveway drains quickly. Water pooling in the middle means the base has settled unevenly and the whole section needs releveling.
- Loose pavers that rock underfoot. One or two loose pieces is a simple re-set. A dozen or more means the base has failed underneath and spot repair won’t hold.
In Bouldin Creek and the older central Austin neighborhoods, we see the same failure pattern: driveways installed 15-plus years ago over a thin sand base, and the clay underneath has done what clay always does. The pavers are fine. The base is shot. That changes the repair math, which we’ll get into below.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For an Austin paver driveway replacement, you’re looking at $7,000 – $18,000 installed. The spread is driven by the square footage (most Austin driveways run 400 to 900 square feet), whether we need to excavate and rebuild the base or just replace the top layer, and which CGI paver style you’re matching. Permeable paver systems run toward the higher end because the base includes drainage layers that standard installs skip. On the parts side alone, a single replacement paver runs $8 – $25 depending on size and series, but the real cost is almost always in the labor and base work.
Every quote includes the written line-item price before any work starts. That’s The Relay Standard. You’ll know exactly what the pavers cost, what the base work costs, and what the labor costs. No change orders, no surprise line items at the end. If a paver doesn’t sit right or a joint fails within 365 days, the Done Right Promise covers the fix. Luca Romano has been reading Austin driveway failures long enough to know that the cheapest bid usually skips the base work, and the base is the whole ballgame.
DIY or Call Us?
A homeowner can replace one or two cracked pavers safely, as long as the base underneath is still solid. You’ll need a matching paver, a rubber mallet, some sand, and a lot of patience for getting the height right. If the replacement sits high, you’ll be tripping on it for years. If it sits low, water pools in the dip and freezes, which starts the whole failure cycle again.
Where DIY goes wrong is the base. Rebuilding a compacted base under a driveway section requires a plate compactor, proper drainage, and the right base material (crushed limestone in Austin, usually with a geotextile fabric over the clay). Get that wrong and you’ll be out there with a level and a wheelbarrow every spring. If the problem is more than two or three loose pavers, or you see standing water, call us at (409) 834-4854. We’ll tell you in the first visit whether it’s a spot fix or a base rebuild, and we’ll put the number in writing before you make a decision.
FAQs

With a properly compacted base and maintained joint sand, CGI pavers last 25 to 40 years in this climate. The pavers themselves rarely fail; the base fails first, usually within 10 to 15 years if it was built thin. Austin’s freeze-thaw is mild compared to northern states, but the clay soil movement is the bigger threat.
Yes, if the base is still structurally sound. We lift the affected pavers, add and recompact base material to restore the slope, then re-set and re-sand the joints. If the entire base has degraded, spot repair won’t hold and a full driveway replacement is the honest answer. Call (409) 834-4854 for an exact assessment, and the estimate is free.
A standard single-car driveway replacement in Austin takes 3 to 5 working days from demo to final sanding. Permeable systems and larger drives add a day or two. You’ll get the schedule in writing before we start, and photo updates during the job so you can see the base going in correctly.
We stock common CGI edge restraints, joint sand, and base panels in our Austin shop, and we order color-matched pavers direct from the supplier with a one to two day turnaround. If you send us a photo of the paver’s underside, we can tell you which series you have before you spend a dime.
