Mr-Glass Roofing: The Austin Owner’s Guide

If you’ve got a Mr-Glass roof or skylight component that’s failed, we stock the replacements and install them in Austin for a typical all-in cost of $400 – $1,800 depending on what came apart. Most Austin homeowners discover the problem the same way: a water stain on the ceiling after a hard rain, or a rattle from up top when the wind kicks up off the Balcones Escarpment. Our trucks carry common Mr-Glass flashings, glazing gaskets, and sealing profiles, so a lot of these calls wrap up in one visit.

We’re an independent Austin service provider, not a corporate arm of Mr-Glass, which means we order direct from the same distributors and pass along a matched part without dealer markup games.

Which Mr-Glass Models This Applies To

An open living space after a whole-home remodel

Mr-Glass roofing components are generally grouped by series and glass panel thickness, not model years like a furnace. The critical identifier is usually an etched mark on the aluminum frame or the corner of the glass lite: you’ll see an “MG” prefix followed by a three-digit series number. That number tells us the exact gasket profile, the drain-channel spacing, and whether the panel is structural or non-structural in the roof deck.

Here’s the Austin-specific compatibility gotcha: homes west of MoPac with steep-pitch roofs often have the MG-400 series, while the flatter ranch builds in Brentwood and Crestview usually run MG-200 or MG-300. The series changes the flashing height and the weep-hole placement, and a mismatched flashing will hold water instead of shedding it. We check the frame stamp before we order anything, because a gasket that fits a 300 series will half-seat on a 400 and leak by the first spring storm.

On OEM versus aftermarket for Mr-Glass specifically: we install genuine Mr-Glass gaskets and flashings when the part is still in active distribution. When Mr-Glass has discontinued a color or profile (common on pre-2010 bronze frames), we move to a matched aftermarket profile from a Texas supplier who runs the same extrusion. The aftermarket profile on older installs often outperforms the original because the current compound resists UV breakdown better than the 2000s-era EPDM did.

Signs Your Mr-Glass Roofing Is Failing

  • Water stain that follows the rafter line. A round brown stain in the middle of a ceiling usually points to a failed glazing gasket, not a roof leak. The water runs in along the frame channel and travels the rafter, so the stain shows up feet away from the actual breach.
  • Rattle or soft thump in high wind. Austin’s March winds are the tell. When the rubber isolation pads compress and harden, the glass lite lifts a fraction and drops back, and you hear it from inside as a low knock on gusty days.
  • Condensation between the glass panes. Once the internal desiccant strip is saturated, no amount of sealing the exterior fixes the fog. The lite needs to come out and get reglazed. We see this most in units facing full south sun in Mueller and Cherrywood.
  • White powdery residue on the aluminum frame. That’s oxidation from a failing anodized coating. Left alone, it pits the frame and eventually compromises the corner joints where the water management actually happens.
  • Weep holes that stay wet days after rain. Test this after a dry spell: if the weep holes at the low end of the frame are still damp four days after a storm, the internal drainage channel is blocked or the flashing tape has broken down.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A finished basement family room with a media wall and wet bar

In Austin, Mr-Glass roof repair and part replacement runs between $400 and $1,800 installed. The low end is a single gasket replacement or reflashing on an accessible roof plane. The high end is a full reglaze of a large multi-lite unit or removal and re-bedding of the glass panel, which involves ladder staging and a second person on the roof.

You get parts plus labor priced as one line, so there’s no surprise “materials charge” appended at the end. We write the price before any work starts, per The Relay Visibility Guarantee, and if the part fails within 365 days we come back and replace it under the Done Right Promise. That’s not a verbal promise, it’s in writing on your quote.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do three things from the ground: check the frame stamp to identify your Mr-Glass series, map the water stain to the nearest rafter to help narrow the leak source, and photograph the weep holes after rain to show us exactly what’s holding water. That’s useful diagnostic work and it saves a service call.

What we don’t recommend is getting on an Austin roof with a caulking gun and hoping for the best with a handyman sealant. Mr-Glass systems rely on pressure-fit gaskets and channel drainage, not surface sealants, and smearing silicone over a failing gasket traps water against the frame and accelerates corrosion. If you’re comfortable on a ladder and the damage is isolated to one gasket, it’s borderline. If the pane itself is moving or the glass is fogged, that’s a two-person job with panel handling that goes wrong fast. Call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s worth a visit.
