Ameristar Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide

If your Ameristar driveway or paver system has a failed part, we stock Ameristar-compatible components and install them across Austin for $7,000 – $18,000 on full paver driveway jobs, with smaller paver patio work starting around $3,500. Most owners discover a problem the same way: a paver sinks after heavy rain, an edge restraint lets go, or the joint sand washes out and weeds take over. You don’t have to live with a driveway that’s slowly shifting. Luca Romano and our crew run Ameristar paver work the same way we run every job: written price before we start, no surprises at the invoice.

Which Ameristar Models This Applies To

A home office with a built-in desk and shelves

Ameristar builds paver and hardscape systems in a few distinct lines, and the compatibility details matter more than most people expect. The two we see most in Austin are the Ameristar interlocking concrete pavers and the larger-format Ameristar slab pavers, which run 24″ x 24″ and sit on a compacted base rather than a sand-set bed. Here’s the gotcha: Ameristar slab pavers are manufactured to a 60mm and 80mm thickness spec, and you cannot mix the two on the same surface. If you have 60mm pavers installed and someone patches in 80mm stock, you’ll feel the height difference with every step and every wheel that rolls over it. OEM Ameristar parts are our default for color-matched replacements, but for edge restraints and base materials we regularly use quality aftermarket equivalents that meet or exceed the original spec, which keeps the total job cost down without cutting corners.

To identify what you have, check the underside of a loose paver for the Ameristar stamp. It’s usually near one corner, about the size of a quarter. If the stamp is worn or absent, measure the paver thickness with a tape measure. That single measurement tells us whether you’re working with the sand-set line or the slab line, which drives everything else about the repair.

Signs Your Ameristar Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Sunken or rocking pavers. This is almost always a base failure underneath, not a bad paver. Austin’s clay-heavy soil swells and shrinks through wet-dry cycles, and a base that wasn’t compacted in lifts will eventually let the surface move.
  • Joint sand washing out after rain. If you see gullies running through the joints after a downpour, the polymeric sand has failed or was never properly activated. Left alone, the pavers start shifting laterally.
  • Edge restraint pulling away from the perimeter. The plastic or aluminum edging is what holds the whole field in tension. When it pops loose, the outer course of pavers spreads and the pattern starts to open up.
  • Weeds or grass pushing through the joints. This means the joint sand is gone and organic material has taken its place. The roots themselves accelerate the failure by pushing pavers apart.
  • White efflorescence blooming on the surface. It’s cosmetic in most cases, but heavy mineral deposits can signal water migrating through the base, which points to a drainage problem that will cause bigger failures down the line.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full paver driveway replacement in Austin runs $7,000 to $18,000 depending on square footage, paver thickness, and how much base reconstruction is required. If you’re only replacing a failed section, the repair usually runs between $800 and $3,000. Paver patio work sits in the $3,500 – $11,000 window. What drives the range is the base more than the pavers themselves. A job where the existing compacted base is sound costs far less than one where we’re digging out six inches of failed clay and rebuilding from scratch. Every quote we write is a written, line-item price before work starts. The number you approve is the number on the invoice. We don’t run change orders unless you ask us to expand the scope, and then it’s agreed in writing first. Our workmanship is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself: look for edge restraints that have pulled loose, note where water pools after rain, and check whether the pavers rock underfoot. Replacing a single sunken paver by pulling it, adding a little sand, and tapping it back is a reasonable Saturday project. But here’s the honest warning: a sinking driveway is never a one-paver problem. The base underneath is failing, and patching the surface hides the cause while the problem spreads. If you’re seeing three or more pavers moving, or the pattern has shifted across a section wider than a trash can lid, the base is compromised and the repair requires taking the area down to the subgrade. That’s not a hand-tool job. We’re happy to walk you through what we’re seeing on the phone before you commit to anything. Call us at (409) 834-4854 and we’ll tell you straight what you’re dealing with.
