Sakrete Kitchen Remodeling: The Austin Owner’s Guide

Sakrete kitchen remodeling in Austin typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 for a full project, depending on cabinet quality, countertop material, and whether you’re moving plumbing or walls. We stock and install Sakrete-compatible setting materials, mortars, and leveling compounds on our trucks, and we can start most kitchen remodels within two weeks of your approved written estimate. Most Austin homeowners call us after they’ve already bought the Sakrete products and hit a wall, either the subfloor won’t level with the self-leveler they picked, or the tile bed cracked because the mortar was mixed too wet for our humidity, or the countertop overhang isn’t supporting the way it should with the mix they used. You’re not the first person to stand in the Home Depot aisle staring at ten different Sakrete bags and realize none of the labels answer the question you actually have.

Call (409) 834-4854

We’re an independent Austin general contractor, not affiliated with Sakrete. That matters because we’ll tell you when a different Sakrete product is the better fit for your specific kitchen, even if it means you return the bag you already bought.

Key Takeaways:

  • Full Sakrete-based kitchen remodels in Austin: $14,000 – $45,000 installed
  • We carry Sakrete self-levelers, thin-set mortars, and floor patch compounds on our trucks
  • Written price before work starts, every time
  • 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the entire remodel, not just the parts

Which Sakrete Models This Applies To

New painted shaker cabinets with an organized deep drawer

Most Austin kitchens we remodel use three Sakrete product families. The first is Sakrete Self-Leveling Underlayment, which comes in 50-lb bags and is what you’ll need if your slab has low spots before tile or LVP goes down. The second is Sakrete Floor Mud and Deck Mud, what pros call dry pack, used to build sloped mortar beds for shower pans that extend into kitchen-adjacent wet areas or for setting heavy islands on uneven slabs. The third is Sakrete Stone Veneer Mortar, which handles backsplashes and any stone accent walls.

The compatibility gotcha most owners hit: Sakrete self-leveler is not one product. It’s a line with different flow and depth ratings. The standard Self-Leveling Underlayment is rated for feather-edge to 1 inch. Sakrete’s Self-Leveling Resurfacer handles up to 1.5 inches. If you pour the standard mix at 2 inches because a slab dropped hard on one side of your kitchen, it’ll crack, and you’ll be chipping it out and starting over. We see this in older Austin homes in Bouldin Creek and Hyde Park where slab settlement is common, especially after the 2023 drought cycles. The fix is often Sakrete’s Fast-Set Self-Leveling Underlayment rated for deeper fills, or a two-pour approach with lath, not just more standard mix.

OEM versus aftermarket: Sakrete is the OEM for its bagged mixes. There’s no “generic Sakrete.” What exists is substitutes, like Mapei or Custom Building Products, and sometimes those swaps are fine for tile thin-set but wrong for a structural fill under cabinets that will hold granite. We spec the actual Sakrete product for the actual load, and we’ll show you the bag label before we cut it open.

Signs Your Sakrete Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Cracking tile or grout along the floor, especially running in a straight line. That’s rarely the tile. It’s the underlayment or mortar bed underneath moving or shrinking. In Austin’s clay soil, slabs flex seasonally, and a Sakrete floor that wasn’t primed before the pour will debond and crack. We pull a tile, look at the bed, and know within ten minutes what’s going on.
  • Hollow-sounding tile when you tap it. Thin-set that skinned over before the tile was set, or mortar mixed too dry for Austin’s heat, leaves air pockets under the tile. It sounds like a drum. The tile hasn’t failed yet, but it will loosen.
  • Self-leveler that never actually leveled. If you poured Sakrete and still have a 3/8-inch dip at the island, the mix was probably over-watered, which kills its compressive strength. It’ll dust and crumble under cabinet weight over time.
  • Countertop overhang flexing or cracking the mortar ledge. Stone counters on cantilevered overhangs need a solid bed, not just dots of mortar. If you see a hairline crack running from the overhang back toward the cabinet, the support bed is failing and the stone will follow.
  • Musty smell under the sink base after a kitchen reno. If a Sakrete floor patch got wet before full cure and was then covered with cabinets, it can hold moisture and go musty. In Austin’s humid summers, that smell shows up fast.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A small remodeled galley kitchen with cabinets to the ceiling

Full kitchen remodels in Austin using Sakrete products run $14,000 – $45,000. That’s the installed range, not the materials-only number. A smaller kitchen with stock cabinets and a basic backsplash lands near the bottom, around $9,000 – $20,000. A larger kitchen with an island, stone counters, and moving a sink or gas line climbs into the $30,000 – $45,000 territory. Here’s how the pieces break down in Austin:

  • Kitchen remodel, full: $14,000 – $45,000
  • Small kitchen remodel: $9,000 – $20,000
  • Cabinet installation: $4,000 – $13,000
  • Countertop installation: $2,000 – $6,500
  • Backsplash installation: $800 – $2,500
  • Kitchen island installation: $3,000 – $10,000

Every one of those numbers includes the parts, the labor, the Sakrete products, the haul-away, and the warranty. The written price we hand you before demo starts is the price on the invoice. If we hit a slab issue that needs a deeper pour, we call you with a number before we pour, not after. And the 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the install for a full year. If the floor cracks, we’re back out.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do a few things before calling us. Check the slab with a 6-foot level and mark the low spots with tape. Look at the Sakrete bag you bought and read the depth rating on the side, then compare that to how deep your low spot actually is. If the bag says 1 inch and your slab drops 2 inches, you’ve found the problem without spending a dime. What you shouldn’t do is mix and pour a self-leveler across a large kitchen if you’ve never done it. It sets fast, it’s heavy, and once it’s down wrong, removing it is a full day with a demolition hammer. That’s not a scare tactic. That’s the job. We’ve chipped out enough bad pours in Austin kitchens to know.

If you’re not sure whether your Sakrete floor is salvageable, call Luca at (409) 834-4854. We’ll come look at it, tell you straight whether it’s a repair or a redo, and write you a price before anything starts.
