Cover Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide

Cover driveway and paver systems run $7,000 to $18,000 fully installed for a standard two-car driveway in Austin, with most jobs landing between $9,000 and $14,000 depending on square footage, paver grade, and base prep. We stock Cover-compatible pavers, edge restraints, joint sand, and base materials on our trucks, and most repairs can be quoted and scheduled within a few days. You’ll usually know a section has failed when you see a sunken paver, a spreading gap, or water pooling where it used to drain.

What gets missed: a failed paver isn’t just a cosmetic problem. It’s a base failure underneath. Austin’s clay-heavy soil expands and contracts through our wet-dry cycles, and when the compacted base gives way, the pavers follow. We see it all over Bouldin Creek, Mueller, and Circle C, where driveways were built fast and the base was never compacted in proper lifts.

Which Cover Models This Applies To

Cover doesn’t make a proprietary paver. The brand specifies modular concrete pavers, usually 60mm or 80mm thick for driveway loads, in a range of standard sizes: 4×8, 8×8, 6×6, and 6×9 rectangles, plus square and rectangular slabs for larger-format looks. If your paver is stamped with a size and a color code on the underside, that’s your match. If the stamping has worn off, we measure the unit and match it against manufacturer sample boards. Austin sun bleaches color over time, so we always pull from the least-exposed area, usually under a car or along a shaded edge, to get the true color for replacement units.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Cover installed pavers sourced from national suppliers, most commonly Belgard, Unilock, and Pavestone. Those same manufacturers sell through local Austin supply houses, so we can match the exact paver line without paying a “Cover markup.” For older installs where the exact line is discontinued, we source a compatible equivalent from the same manufacturer and blend it. The real compatibility question is base depth, not paver brand. A Cover driveway spec called for 8 to 10 inches of compacted base under the pavers. If yours was built thin, that’s the root cause of most failures we see in Austin.

Signs Your Cover Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Sunken or depressed sections. This is base failure. Austin’s expansive clay shifts when it dries and swells when it rains, and a poorly compacted base sinks first. If you see a low spot that holds water after a storm, the base has already moved.
  • Pavers that rock or wobble underfoot or under tire load. Loose bedding sand has migrated out through the joints or into the base. The paver isn’t broken; the support under it is gone.
  • Spreading or widening joints between pavers. Edge restraints have failed or were never installed properly. Once the edge lets go, the field of pavers starts drifting. This is the most preventable failure and the one we fix most often.
  • Cracked or split pavers in the wheel path. Vehicle weight exceeded what the paver thickness and base could carry. A 60mm paver on a thin base will crack under repeated truck or SUV loads. 80mm pavers hold up far better for daily driveway use.
  • Standing water that didn’t pool before. The driveway has shifted, and the slope is now working against you. In Austin, that standing water accelerates base washout and turns a small dip into a full section replacement if it’s ignored through a wet spring.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A dining nook with a built-in banquette

A full paver driveway replacement in Austin runs $7,000 to $18,000, with the spread driven by paver grade, total square footage, demo and haul-away of the old surface, and how much base rebuilding is required. A partial repair, where we pull a failed section, recompact the base, and relay the pavers, typically runs $1,200 to $4,000 depending on how deep the problem goes and whether the old pavers can be salvaged.

Every quote from Sawyer Remodel Austin includes line-item costs: demo, base materials, pavers, edge restraints, sand, labor, and hauling. That’s The Relay Standard at work, a written price before work starts and no surprise line items at invoice time. The work carries a written guarantee, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise means if a paver we set doesn’t hold, we make it right within a full year. That’s not an upgrade. It’s on every job.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check your own edge restraints, look for pooling water, and measure the paver thickness on a loose unit. That gives you useful information before you call. What you shouldn’t do is dig out the failed section and attempt to recompact the base yourself. Getting the slope right, the compaction right, and the joint sand right is what separates a driveway that lasts ten years from one that fails again in two. Austin’s soil punishes shortcuts. If you’re lifting more than a few pavers, you need a plate compactor, the right base material, and someone who has done this on Central Texas clay for years. Luca Romano and the crew have been doing exactly that across Austin for nearly two decades. Call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll give you an honest read on what you’re working with before any money changes hands.
