Bufftech Fence Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Bufftech fence installation in Austin typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a complete panel-and-post replacement on an average residential yard. We stock Bufftech-compatible posts, rails, and pickets locally, and most partial repairs can be quoted and scheduled within a few days. Homeowners usually discover the problem when a windstorm snaps a post at ground level or the Texas sun finally brittles a gate corner beyond repair.
Bufftech fences are vinyl and aluminum systems built for subdivisions and HOAs across the Austin metro. They hold up well against our summers, but nothing lasts forever. The good news is you don’t have to replace the whole run when one section fails. Luca Romano and the crew at Sawyer Remodel Austin have matched Bufftech profiles for years, and we can usually tell from a photo what series you have.
Which Bufftech Models This Applies To

Bufftech makes several fence lines, and not every post or picket swaps between them. The main series you’ll find in Austin neighborhoods are Bufftech CertaGrain, Brookhaven, and the commercial-grade Imperial line. CertaGrain has a wood-grain texture, Brookhaven is a smooth residential profile, and Imperial runs heavier wall thicknesses meant for pool enclosures and HOA perimeter fencing. A CertaGrain post from 2012 will not accept a Brookhaven rail the same way, and no amount of shimming changes that.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: Bufftech changed its rail-to-post connection design around 2016. Older panels used a notched post with a separate aluminum insert. Newer stock uses a routed post with the rail sliding directly into the channel. If your fence predates 2016 and one post needs replacing, you’re often better off replacing that entire bay with a matched new-style section rather than hunting for old-stock inserts. We’ll tell you which route saves money before we ever put a tool on the fence.
For aftermarket parts, we’ve used quality equivalents for Bufftech pickets and bottom rails when the original is discontinued or backordered by months. But for posts and gate frames, we recommend genuine Bufftech or a direct spec match. The UV stabilizers in the vinyl matter here. Central Texas sun punishes cheap regrind material, and you’ll see it chalk and crack within five years.

Signs Your Bufftech Fence Installation Is Failing
- Leaning post without impact damage. This usually means the concrete footing has cracked below grade, often because the original install only set the post two feet deep in expanding Austin clay soil. The post itself may be fine, but the footing isn’t holding anymore.
- Chalky white residue on the surface. Early UV degradation. Bufftech panels should hold color for 15-plus years, but intense west-facing exposure can accelerate surface oxidation. It’s cosmetic at first, structural much later.
- Rail sag between posts. The bottom rail is bowing or the post channel has widened. This is common on older Bufftech runs where the aluminum stiffener inside the bottom rail corroded after years of sprinkler contact.
- Gate drags or won’t latch. The gate frame is racking, or the post holding the hinges has shifted. Buffalo-style aluminum gate frames can also shear their corner brackets if kids swing on them.
- Picket blowouts after a storm. Vinyl pickets snap at their thinnest point where they notch into the bottom rail. One or two broken pickets is a repair. Ten or more across a run tells us the whole bay took a wind load it wasn’t braced for.
If you see any of these, don’t wait. A leaning post puts weight on the panels next to it, and one failed bay quickly becomes three.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Austin homeowners, here’s what Bufftech fence installation costs through Sawyer Remodel Austin:
- Partial repair (single post or gate section): $450 to $1,200, including parts and concrete work
- One full bay replacement (post-to-post): $600 to $1,500 depending on height and gates involved
- Full residential Bufftech fence install: $3,500 to $9,000 for an average yard, with taller privacy runs and gates on the upper end
- Aluminum Bufftech (Imperial line): $4,000 to $10,000, with the premium going to heavier gauges and pool-code requirements
The biggest cost driver is post setting depth. Austin building code expects fence posts below the frost line and into stable soil, which in our area means 30 to 36 inches for most yards. Clay soil digs hard, which is labor. If your old fence used shallow footings, we redo them properly or we don’t do the job at all, because a shallow footing in Texas clay is why most Bufftech fences fail early.
Every quote includes the parts, the labor, the concrete, and haul-away of the old section. We put the price in writing before work starts, and the number you approve is the number on the invoice. The work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
Vinyl fence work is not high-tension dangerous like garage springs, but it can go wrong in expensive ways. You can safely check your fence line for leaning posts, broken rails, and cracked pickets. That’s information we’d want anyway. What you shouldn’t DIY is pulling a concrete footing. That means auguring through clay, re-setting a post plumb, and re-routing rail channels to match Bufftech’s newer connection style. Get it a quarter-inch off and the gate binds. Get the depth wrong and you’re doing it again in three years.
We carry common Bufftech replacement pickets, rails, and gate hardware on the truck, and we can source full panels quickly. If you’re not sure what you need, send us a photo or call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s a swap or a full section replacement.
FAQs

A properly installed Bufftech vinyl fence should last 20 to 25 years in the Austin climate, with the aluminum Imperial line pushing beyond that. The wildcards are sun exposure, soil movement, and irrigation overspray. West-facing runs in full afternoons sun will show surface wear faster. A fence that fails at year eight almost always failed because of installation, not material.
In most cases, no. A cracked post has already lost structural integrity, and patching vinyl looks like a patch. If the crack is hairline and at the top cap, sometimes a rail brace buys you time, but we’ll tell you if you’re just delaying a replacement. The honest answer is usually cheaper over two years to replace the post now. Call us at (409) 834-4854 for an assessment.
Most single-post or single-bay repairs take one day on site, including concrete cure time sufficient to brace the section. Full residential installs run two to four days depending on yard size, gate count, and how hard the digging goes. We schedule a specific day and show up with a live arrival time.
We keep common CertaGrain and Brookhaven pickets, bottom rails, post caps, and gate latches on hand for fast repairs. Full panels and specific Imperial line pieces we order directly, usually arriving within a few business days. If it’s discontinued, we’ll match the profile with a quality equivalent that holds the same warranty standard. Send us a photo of your fence and we’ll identify what you have before you spend a dollar.
