CertainTeed Fence Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide

CertainTeed fence installation in Austin typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a full perimeter job, with most mid-sized yards landing between $4,500 and $6,500 installed. We stock CertainTeed-compatible posts, rails, and pickets on our trucks, and most standalone section replacements can be quoted and scheduled within the same week. You’re probably here because a section of your CertainTeed fence is leaning, a post snapped at ground level, or the bottom rail has started pulling away from its brackets after a few Texas summers.

The soil here is the usual suspect. Austin’s clay-heavy ground expands when it’s wet and contracts during dry stretches, and that movement is brutal on vinyl fence posts. CertainTeed fencing itself is solid, but the installation underneath it is what fails first. If you’re seeing gaps between pickets or a post that’s no longer plumb, the problem is rarely the material. It’s the hole, the concrete, or the depth.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed has built their vinyl fence line under a few names over the years: Bufftech, SimTek, and most recently the CertainTeed Vinyl Fence series. The Bufftech line is the one we see most often in Austin backyards, particularly the Chesterfield and Concord styles for privacy, and Brookhaven for a lower semi-private look. If you’ve got an older fence and don’t know which line you have, check the inside face of a post cap or the back side of a top rail. CertainTeed stamps their name and sometimes the profile code there. If the stamp is gone, measure a picket: Bufftech privacy pickets run roughly 6 inches wide with a tongue-and-groove edge profile, and that’s the measurement that tells us what to order so the new section matches what you already have.

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: CertainTeed has changed the rail channel dimensions slightly across manufacturing years, so a picket from a 2012 Chesterfield panel may not seat cleanly into a 2023 rail. That’s the kind of thing that causes a cheap handyman install to look wrong from day one. We match by era, not just by style. As for OEM versus aftermarket, we’ve used both. CertainTeed’s OEM rails and posts are the safest match for color and UV fade, and their warranty language holds up better when the whole system is theirs. Aftermarket equivalents can save 15 to 20 percent, but the white doesn’t always match after two years in Texas sun. We’ll quote both and tell you which trade makes sense.

Signs Your CertainTeed Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Posts leaning more than 5 degrees: In Austin clay, a shallow footing or a post hole that wasn’t bell-bottomed at the base gets pushed out of level as the ground swells. The post itself usually isn’t cracked. The concrete around it is heaving.
  • Bottom rail pulling out of the post bracket: The rail expands and contracts in heat, and Austin’s 100-degree summer days are the test. If the rail end is separating from the post, the bracket has likely stripped or the post insert is cracked from thermal stress.
  • Gaps opening between pickets: Tongue-and-groove pickets lock together to stay private. When you see daylight through a formerly solid panel, something has shifted sideways. Usually it’s a post that’s no longer anchoring the section.
  • Warped or wavy pickets near a grill, AC unit, or west-facing exposure: Reflected or direct heat is tough on vinyl. CertainTeed materials are formulated for it, but even the best vinyl will deform if something is blasting 140-degree air at the same spot for years.
  • White chalky residue that won’t wash off: That’s oxidation, and every vinyl fence will show it eventually. If it’s happening on only one or two sections, those panels are older than the rest or came from a different manufacturing run. Replacement panels won’t match perfectly, which is why we check the age of the whole fence before we quote.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A built-in window seat in a bay window

In Austin, a full CertainTeed vinyl fence install with new posts, rails, and pickets runs $3,500 to $9,000 depending on linear footage, gate count, and whether we’re replacing concrete footings or reusing solid ones. A single section replacement, which means pulling one post and rebuilding the adjoining panels, usually lands between $350 and $800 parts and labor. A post-only reset with new concrete runs $120 to $250 per post. Those are the honest ranges we quote from, and the number we write on the estimate is the number you approve. We don’t do change orders on paper.

What’s included on every CertainTeed fence job: removal and haul-away of the failed section, new concrete for any post we set, galvanized or stainless hardware rated for vinyl, and a written workmanship warranty that covers our install. The 365-Day Done Right Promise backs it: if the post we set moves, we come back and fix it. No argument. And if some part of our repair fails within that year, your second visit is free.

DIY or Call Us?

Vinyl fence repair is not a high-tension spring situation, but I’ll still be straight with you: this is one of those jobs that looks easy in a YouTube thumbnail and fights you in the real world. You can absolutely dig down and check whether a post is cracked or whether the concrete footing has shifted. What you can’t easily do is pull a vinyl post out of a bell-bottomed footing in Austin clay without mangling it, and if you set the new post shallow because the digging got hard, you’ll be looking at the same lean in two years. The time to call someone is when a post is actually moving. A loose post means the structural spine of the fence is compromised, and messing around with it usually damages the rails and pickets that were fine before you started.

Luca Romano has pulled enough Houston-black-clay post holes to know the difference between a ten-minute check and a four-hour dig. If you’re not sure, call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll tell you over the phone what you’re probably looking at.
