IKO Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide

IKO driveway pavers and the underlying base materials run $7,000 to $18,000 installed in Austin, depending on square footage, access, and what’s under the current surface. We stock IKO-compatible paver units, edge restraints, and base repair materials on our trucks, and most paver failures we see are caught the same way: a lip forms, water pools, or a section sinks after a heavy rain. If your IKO driveway has shifted, cracked, or started holding water, here’s exactly what to know before you spend a dollar.

Call (409) 834-4854

Key takeaways:

  • Most IKO paver failures trace back to the base, not the paver itself
  • Austin’s clay soil expands and contracts enough to crack bases within 3 to 5 years if they weren’t built right
  • We write the price before work starts, and that number doesn’t change unless you change the scope
  • You’re looking at a repair or a redo depending on how far the base has shifted

Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO manufactures paver systems under a few different product lines, and the compatibility question usually comes down to thickness and joint width, not a model number stamped on the paver. The big one Austin owners hit: IKO’s 60mm pavers are rated for pedestrian and light vehicle use, but a 60mm paver on a driveway that sees full-size pickups every day will fail early. For driveways, you want 80mm pavers minimum. If you’re not sure what you have, flip one over. The thickness in millimeters is molded into the underside, and that number tells us more than any paperwork will.

Aftermarket paver units that match IKO’s dimensions and color range exist, and for most driveway repairs they’re a legitimate way to save 15 to 20 percent on materials. But color matching aftermarket pavers to IKO’s specific blends is harder than it looks, especially on driveways that have been in the Texas sun for five or more years. UV fading shifts the original color, and a brand-new IKO paver won’t match the field either. We handle this by pulling pavers from less visible areas, like the back edge, to repair the visible section, then backfilling with the closest match we can verify on site. If the driveway is under ten years old and you have the original batch number from the delivery pallet, IKO can sometimes match the run. That’s a real compatibility gotcha most people don’t know exists.

Sawyer Remodel Austin is an independent remodeling and hardscape contractor. We’re not affiliated with IKO, and we don’t pretend to be. What we do is install and repair their products correctly, and we’ve seen enough IKO driveways in Austin to know exactly what fails and why.

Signs Your IKO Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Pavers sinking in a low spot after rain. This is almost never the paver’s fault. The base underneath has washed out or compacted unevenly. Austin’s clay soil shrinks during dry spells and swells after rain, which works the base apart over time.
  • A visible lip where the driveway meets the garage slab or street. One section has settled while the other stayed put. That lip is a trip hazard and a sign the edge restraint has failed. Once the edge lets go, pavers start wandering outward and the problem accelerates.
  • Pavers rocking when you step on them. Individual units are supposed to lock together under sand and edge pressure. If several rock independently, the joint sand has washed out and the interlock is gone. This one repairs fast if caught early.
  • Water pooling against the house or along the perimeter. A correctly pitched IKO driveway moves water off the surface in minutes. Pooling means the pitch has flattened, usually because the base settled unevenly. Water sitting against a foundation in Austin is a slow-moving problem you don’t want to ignore.
  • White or chalky residue spreading across the pavers. That’s efflorescence, and in small amounts it’s cosmetic. But if it appeared suddenly along with cracking, it can signal moisture being trapped under the pavers, which breaks down the base and creates freeze-thaw stress in winter.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled staircase with wood treads and a slim metal railing

Full IKO paver driveway replacement in Austin runs $7,000 to $18,000. The spread comes down to three things: total square footage, whether we’re excavating the old base or building on top of it, and access for equipment. A standard two-car driveway around 400 to 500 square feet with a full base rebuild lands in the $10,000 to $14,000 range in most Austin neighborhoods we work.

What’s included in our price:

  • Full excavation and haul-off of the failed base
  • New compacted base built for Austin’s clay soil conditions
  • IKO or IKO-compatible pavers in your existing color where possible
  • Edge restraints, joint sand, and final compaction
  • Written price before any work starts, with no change orders unless you change the scope

A partial repair, where we redo one failed section and re-pitch it, typically runs $1,500 to $4,000 depending on how far the failure has spread. Every job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right, in writing, on every project.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things you can check yourself, and things you shouldn’t touch. You can safely pull a couple of pavers from the failed area and look at the base underneath. If the base is wet mush, crumbling, or visibly uneven, that’s all we need to know. You can also run a hose over the driveway and watch where the water goes. That tells you whether the pitch is still working.

What you shouldn’t do is re-base a driveway section yourself. IKO pavers are heavy, the base has to be compacted in lifts, and if the pitch is wrong you’ve spent a weekend and a few hundred dollars making the problem worse. The base is the part you can’t see and the part that matters most. If you’re in Austin and the driveway’s failing, call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll come look at it. The estimate is free, and you’ll know exactly what you’re dealing with either way.
