Master Halco Fence Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide

We install and repair Master Halco fence systems throughout Austin, with typical installed pricing running $3,500 – $9,000 depending on linear footage, post condition, and whether we’re doing a full replacement or a section repair. Most jobs are booked within the same week, and if you’re replacing a failed section we can usually match the existing Master Halco profile without tearing out the whole line. The way owners find us: a post leans after a storm, a gate drags on the ground, or a section of pickets starts pulling away from the rail and suddenly the yard doesn’t feel private anymore.

Which Master Halco Models This Applies To

Master Halco makes a wide range of fence systems, and we work with the ones Austin homeowners actually have in their yards: PostMaster steel post systems, standard wood privacy (Western red cedar and pressure-treated pine), ornamental iron with the PostMaster insert, and their vinyl lines including the Veranda and Bufftech series. If you’re not sure what you have, check the top rail or the post cap. Master Halco stamps or stickers most components with a series code. For PostMaster systems, the giveaway is the steel post itself: rectangular, flanged, no wood 4×4 inside. That matters because you cannot swap a rotted wood post for a PostMaster steel post without changing the bracket geometry, and vice versa. That’s the kind of compatibility gotcha that turns a $400 repair into a $2,500 re-do if it’s handled wrong.

A note on parts sourcing: Sawyer Remodel Austin is an independent Austin contractor. We are not a Master Halco dealer or affiliate. We source OEM Master Halco components where the project calls for exact matching, and we also stock quality aftermarket equivalents for common things like gate hardware, tension bands, and post caps. For visible parts like pickets and top rails, we recommend OEM whenever the fence is under 10 years old so the color and profile line up. Older fences have weathered enough that a well-matched aftermarket board often blends better than factory-new OEM.

Signs Your Master Halco Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Posts leaning at ground level: The most common failure in Austin, especially after heavy rain saturates the clay. With PostMaster steel posts, the post itself rarely fails. What fails is the concrete footing depth or the soil around it. With wood posts, you’re looking at rot at the soil line. Either way, a leaning post will only get worse, and it drags the rail and pickets with it.
  • Gate dragging or latching off-center: Over time, the hinge post moves or the gate frame sags. On Master Halco gates, the diagonal brace in the frame is often undersized for a heavy gate, so the gate starts to parallelogram. You can true it once, but if the brace is cut the wrong direction, it’ll keep coming back.
  • Rails pulling away from posts: On wood-backed Master Halco systems, the rail brackets or nails at the post connection are the first fasteners to go. You’ll see daylight between the rail end and the post. Left alone, the whole section can drop in a wind event.
  • Pickets warping, cracking, or cupping: Austin’s freeze-thaw-free humidity swings are tough on cedar and pine. Once a picket cups, it pulls away from its neighbor and privacy gaps open up. Replacing individual pickets works short-term, but widespread cupping usually means the section is near the end of its useful life.
  • Vinyl panels separating at the seams or turning chalky: Bufftech and Veranda panels hold up well in Texas sun, but after 12 – 15 years the UV stabilizers break down. Panels get brittle, seams open, and a good hailstorm punches right through. At that point, patching becomes a losing game and section replacement is the honest move.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A dining nook with a built-in banquette

For an Austin Master Halco fence installation, plan on $3,500 – $9,000 for a typical residential job. A small repair, say two posts and a gate rehang, often lands between $600 and $1,800. A full backyard privacy fence in PostMaster steel with cedar pickets runs toward the top of that range. The main cost drivers are linear footage, post type (steel runs higher on materials but lower on long-term maintenance), whether we’re pulling and hauling old concrete footings, and access. If your yard requires hand-digging because a machine can’t get through the side gate, that labor shows up in the line-item quote.

DIY or Call Us?

Some Master Halco maintenance is genuinely DIY-friendly: tightening a latch, replacing a few pickets, adjusting a hinge. If you can identify the part and you own basic tools, those are fair game. Where owners get hurt, literally and financially, is with posts and gates. Pulling a failed post with a high-lift jack, mixing and setting concrete in Austin clay, or trying to straighten a twisted PostMaster steel post is the kind of work that goes sideways fast. High-tension fence lines and heavy gate hardware can snap and swing under load. If the issue is below ground or involves a gate that weighs more than you’d want pinning your leg, call a pro. Our number is (409) 834-4854. We’ll send someone who can look at it and tell you straight whether it’s a Saturday job for you or a two-hour swap for us.
