Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide

Oldcastle driveway pavers and retaining wall blocks hold up well in Central Texas, but when a section fails you’ll usually see it in three ways: a sunken paver run from washed-out base material, a cracked coping stone from our freeze-thaw cycle, or edge restraints that let go after heavy rain. We stock Oldcastle-compatible pavers, edge restraints, polymeric sand, and base material for Austin jobs, with installed repair work typically running $350 to $1,200 depending on the square footage and what’s underneath. Most paver repairs we handle same-week, and we can match faded existing pavers using a mix of new stock and your salvageable pieces.

Luca Romano has been looking at failed paver work long enough to know the real problem is rarely the paver itself. It’s what’s under it. Austin’s clay soil expands and contracts with rain and drought, and a paver driveway laid without proper base prep will telegraph that movement within a few seasons. The Oldcastle product line itself is solid – we wouldn’t install it otherwise – but the part that fails first is almost always the foundation, not the brick.

Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

An open living space after a whole-home remodel

Oldcastle’s paver and wall product lines are broad, and Austin suppliers carry a rotating selection. The pavers you’re most likely to have underfoot are from the Holland Stone, Cobble Paver, or Bristol lines – these are the workhorse 60mm and 80mm units used on driveways and walkways across Austin. For retaining and garden walls, the Dublin, Maytrx, and Keystone systems are the common Oldcastle units we see in Bouldin Creek, Tarrytown, and Hyde Park yards.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit: Oldcastle changes its color blends and mold profiles over time, so a paver you bought five years ago under the same product name may not match a new pallet perfectly. We handle this by pulling your existing pavers, cleaning the good ones, and mixing them with new stock to blend the color transition. The other thing to know: Oldcastle wall blocks are engineered around specific pin systems and lip depths. A Keystone block won’t seat on a Dublin base course cleanly, and forcing it creates a wall that leans within a season. If you’re not sure what you have, take a photo of the block profile and we’ll identify it before we quote.

Sawyer Remodel Austin is an independent contractor, not an Oldcastle dealer or affiliate. We install and repair Oldcastle products because they’re widely available in Austin and their specs are consistent – not because we’re tied to the brand. That means when your existing pavers match a current line, we use them. When they don’t, we tell you and show you alternatives like matching units from Belgard or Pavestone that sit correctly against your existing work.

Signs Your Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Sunken or dipping pavers in one area. This is base failure, not paver failure. Austin’s clay soil shrinks in drought and swells after rain, and if the base wasn’t compacted properly (or the soil wasn’t stabilized), the pavers sink with it. You’ll usually see this near downspouts or low spots where water pools.
  • Spalling or flaking on the paver surface. Austin’s UV is unforgiving, and older Oldcastle pavers without a quality sealer can start shedding their top layer. The paver isn’t structurally dead, but the surface gets rough and chalky. Replacement is cosmetic but worth doing before water intrusion widens the damage.
  • Gaps opening between pavers. Polymeric sand breaks down over time – usually 5 to 8 years in Austin’s heat. When the sand washes out, pavers shift, weeds sprout, and the interlock that makes a paver driveway strong starts to fail. Re-sanding is cheap if caught early; ignored long enough, the edge pavers start migrating.
  • Edge pavers separating from the border. If the plastic or aluminum edge restraint wasn’t spiked in properly, or the installer skipped it entirely, the border pavers walk outward until the driveway edge looks wavy. This is a straightforward repair: re-align pavers, reset the restraint, re-sand.
  • Retaining wall blocks tilting or bulging. Oldcastle wall systems rely on geogrid and proper drainage behind the wall. If water builds up behind a block wall on an Austin slope, hydrostatic pressure pushes the wall forward. You’ll see the top course start to lean. That’s a drainage problem first, a block problem second.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Austin, here’s what to expect on Oldcastle paver and driveway work:

  • Paver driveway installation (new): $7,000 – $18,000
  • Concrete driveway installation: $4,500 – $12,000
  • Driveway replacement (tear-out and re-pour or re-pave): $5,000 – $14,000
  • Paver patio installation: $3,500 – $11,000
  • Localized paver repair (re-level, re-sand, reset edge): $350 – $1,200 per section
  • Full driveway re-sand and seal: $250 – $700

What drives the number: how many square feet we’re working, whether the existing base is salvageable or needs to be removed and re-compacted, paver availability in Austin, and access. A driveway in a tight Hyde Park lot with fence-line access takes longer than an open lot in Circle C. Every quote includes the written price before work starts – that’s the Relay Standard – and we line-item the parts, labor, base material, and haul-away so you see exactly what you’re paying for. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if a repaired section shifts or the sand fails within a year, we come back and fix it without a second invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

You can absolutely re-sand your own paver joints if the pavers themselves are still seated and level. Buy polymeric sand (we recommend Techniseal or Alliance brands, both rated for Texas heat), sweep it into the joints, and mist it lightly. That’s a Saturday job and it’ll buy you a few more years. You can also pull a single cracked paver and drop in a replacement if you have spares on hand.

Where DIY goes wrong in Austin is what’s underneath. If your pavers are sinking, that’s a base problem – and fixing it means pulling the section, removing and re-compacting the base material, checking drainage, and relaying the pavers. Miss the compaction step and you’ll be doing the same repair next spring when the clay shifts again. Same logic on retaining walls: if the wall is leaning, there’s drainage or structural work behind it that is genuinely dangerous to dig out by hand. A failed wall on a slope can let go suddenly, and we’ve seen fences, trees, and a very surprised dog go with it. If you’re at the “I wonder if I can just stack these back up” stage, call (409) 834-4854 instead. We’ll come take a look and give you a written price before any work starts.
