PGT Fence Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide

A PGT fence replacement in Austin typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 fully installed, depending on linear footage, post condition, and whether you’re replacing a section or the whole perimeter. We stock PGT-compatible fence hardware and panels on our trucks, which means most Austin jobs go from failed part to finished fence in a single visit. You’ll usually find the problem the same way every homeowner does: a gate that suddenly drags, a panel that’s listing after a storm, or a post that’s rotted at the base and took the rail with it.

PGT fencing is built different from the box-store stuff, and that’s the point. The aluminum and vinyl lines are engineered for coastal-grade wind loads and UV exposure, which matters in Austin summers when the sun cooks lesser materials into brittle plastic. When a PGT part fails here, it’s almost never the panel itself. It’s the hardware: post caps cracked from heat cycling, gate hinges wallowed out, or bottom rails that collected water because the weep holes got clogged with Texas dust. We’ll get into what fails and why below.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

An open living space after a whole-home remodel

PGT’s residential fence line breaks into two families: the PGT aluminum fence (also sold under the WinGuard and Premier Aluminum lines) and the PGT vinyl fence, which includes the Estate and Horizon series. Aluminum panels come in 4-foot, 5-foot, and 6-foot heights with either flat-top or spear-top pickets. Vinyl panels run in 6-foot and 8-foot widths, with tongue-and-groove pickets that lock into a U-channel bottom rail.

The compatibility gotcha with PGT aluminum is the picket spacing spec. PGT uses a 3-7/8-inch picket gap on its residential line, which is slightly narrower than the generic aluminum fencing you’ll find at supply houses in Austin. That means a generic infill panel won’t match the sight line of your existing PGT run, even if the post spacing lines up. We’ve also run into older PGT vinyl where the bottom rail channel is 1-1/2 inches deep, not the 1-1/4 inches on newer production. Measure before you buy, or let our crew match it on site.

For OEM versus aftermarket: PGT’s powder-coated aluminum is a two-stage finish rated for 15 to 20 years in direct sun. Aftermarket rails and pickets are cheaper, but the coating is thinner and Texas sun will chalk it within three to five years. On vinyl, we’ll use PGT or an equivalent-grade uPVC with the same wall thickness. Cheaper vinyl sags between posts, and it’s obvious a year later.

One note for clarity: Sawyer Remodel Austin is an independent remodeling and repair company. We install and repair PGT fencing because we trust the product, not because we’re a PGT dealer or affiliate.

Signs Your PGT Fence Installation Is Failing

  • A gate that drags or won’t latch. Nine times out of ten in Austin it’s the hinge post leaning from soil movement. The black clay in areas like Bouldin Creek expands and contracts hard during wet-dry cycles, and it shoves posts out of plumb. The gate binds because the post moved, not because the gate warped.
  • Post caps gone missing or cracked. PGT post caps are a wear item in this climate. The UV degrades the plastic until the cap loses its grip, and then water gets straight into the post. Aluminum posts will handle it longer than you’d think, but vinyl posts can split when water freezes inside during the occasional hard Austin winter night.
  • Bottom rail rust bleed on aluminum panels. You’ll see orange staining at the screw points. It means the fasteners weren’t stainless and the powder coat has been compromised. Left alone, the rail will eventually separate from the post bracket.
  • Wobbly vinyl panels that flex in the wind. That’s almost always the post itself, not the panel. Vinyl fence posts that weren’t set in concrete or were set in shallow holes will sway. The panel is just following the post.
  • Milky or chalky vinyl surface. A white powder that rubs off on your hand means the UV stabilizers in the vinyl have exhausted themselves. PGT’s factory finish shouldn’t do that for well over a decade, so if you’re seeing it early, the panel’s been exposed to reflected heat (like from a south-facing stucco wall) or it’s a knockoff.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled living room with built-in shelves around the fireplace

For an Austin PGT fence installation, plan on $3,500 to $9,000 for a typical residential job. A single gate replacement with new hinges and hardware lands at the bottom of that range. A full perimeter with 6-foot PGT aluminum panels, steel-reinforced posts, and two gates hits the top, and can exceed it if your lot has elevation changes or hard rock at the post holes.

Here’s how the numbers break down in the Austin market:

  • PGT aluminum panel section replacement: $45 – $75 per linear foot installed
  • PGT vinyl panel section replacement: $35 – $60 per linear foot installed
  • Gate replacement (single, hardware included): $800 – $1,800
  • Post replacement (aluminum or vinyl, concrete set): $150 – $350 per post
  • Full residential PGT fence install (150 – 200 linear feet): $3,500 – $9,000

Every Austin PGT fence job from Sawyer Remodel includes the written price before we start, so the number you approve is the number on the invoice. No change orders because we found surprises, no upcharge at the end. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right, in writing, on every single fence job.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can absolutely check your own fence: walk the line, look for leaning posts, grab each picket and give it a shake, check the gate hinges for play. None of that requires tools and all of it tells you what’s actually failing. What owners in Austin shouldn’t do is dig out and reset a concrete-set post by hand in July, or try to pull an aluminum panel back square with a come-along. Bent rails are a replacement item, and setting posts in proper concrete footings with correct depth for our clay soil is skilled labor if you want the fence to still be plumb in five years.

If the project is bigger than a single picket, call (409) 834-4854. We’ll come out, check the whole run, and give you a written price before any work starts. Luca Romano has been reading fence lines and floor plans the same way for twenty years, and he’ll tell you if it’s a two-hour job or a full replacement before we touch anything.
