Schluter Fence Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide

Schluter fence installation in Austin typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 installed, and most jobs are done in one to two days once the material is on hand. That’s the honest range for real Schluter edge trim, profiles, and waterproofing bands tied into a fence build or rebuild where your tile, deck, or vertical surface meets the fence line. What most owners notice first isn’t the fence itself; it’s the tile or trim pulling away, staining at the base, or a gap opening where the fence post meets a hard surface. In Austin’s freeze-thaw winter mornings and 100-degree summer afternoons, that junction point is exactly where water sneaks in and starts working the Schluter profile loose.

We run Schluter-related fence jobs through the full Sawyer Remodel Austin process: a written price before any work starts, a live arrival time, and photo updates before and after. If you’re holding a cracked Schluter edge strip or a fence post that’s loosened against a tiled base, call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll tell you frankly whether it’s a repair or a full re-install.

Which Schluter Models This Applies To

First, the pattern question: what’s actually failing? Schluter doesn’t make fence panels, but their profiles and waterproofing systems are installed right at the fence-to-surface junction on plenty of Austin jobs: Schluter-SCHIENE or Schluter-JOLLY edge trim running along the base of a tiled wall that meets a wooden or metal fence line, Schluter-DITRA or DITRA-HEAT membrane under an exterior tile apron beside a fence post, or Schluter-KERDI-BAND sealing the seam where a fence post punctures a walkway or low wall. These parts fail for specific reasons, and matching the replacement means knowing what’s there now.

Check the visible edge or the backside of a removed piece. Schluter profiles have the series name stamped or printed inside the anchoring leg: SCHIENE, JOLLY, QUADEC, RONDEC, or DECO. The profile number tells you the finish (AE is brushed stainless look, TS is solid aluminum, EB is PVC). Width matters too: SCHIENE comes in heights from 4.5 mm up to 12.5 mm, and if you’re replacing one that spans a fence-to-tile gap, using the wrong height leaves the membrane edge exposed to Austin rain. For aftermarket equivalents, we’ve installed both Schluter OEM and quality third-party aluminum profiles, and the honest take is this: Schluter’s OEM anchoring leg is slightly thicker, which matters at the stress point where a fence post base meets tile. For most Austin fence-junction installs, we recommend OEM Schluter because the membrane-to-profile bond is the waterproofing, not just the cosmetics. That said, we’ll show you both prices in writing and let you choose.

Signs Your Schluter Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Tile hairline cracks radiating from the fence post base. This is the most common Austin-specific failure: the post moves slightly with soil expansion (our clay-heavy ground swells when it rains and shrinks in drought), and that movement transfers through the Schluter profile into the tile. The profile wasn’t the problem; the post wasn’t independently anchored.
  • Alkaline crust or white powder at the profile edge. Water is getting behind the KERDI or DITRA membrane and pulling salts out of the mortar. In Austin’s hard-water environment, this shows up fast and tells us the waterproofing junction at the fence line has already failed.
  • Profile lifting away from the wall or deck. Once the anchoring leg separates from the thinset, the whole edge becomes a catch point for yard debris and moisture. Pulling it loose to “inspect” usually breaks the tile behind it, so we replace rather than re-seat.
  • Rust-colored staining on aluminum or stainless profiles. Austin’s humidity plus fertilizer runoff from lawns creates micro-corrosion at the profile’s cut ends. Schluter’s PVC lines don’t do this, which is one reason we stock SCHIENE-EB for exterior fence junctions.
  • Fence post wobble with no visible tile damage yet. This is the cheapest time to call: before the Schluter edge takes the flex. One post base re-set now often prevents a full profile and tile replacement later. Just because you don’t see damage doesn’t mean the waterproofing is still intact.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Austin Schluter fence installation or replacement sits between $3,500 and $9,000 installed, depending on the linear footage of profile, whether we’re pulling and re-setting posts, and whether the waterproofing membrane underneath needs to be cut back and re-sealed. The low end covers a straightforward SCHIENE or JOLLY replacement along 20 to 30 linear feet with no post work. The high end covers post extraction, new concrete footings, membrane repair, new Schluter profile, tile patching, and full waterproofing on longer runs, especially on sloped lots in neighborhoods like Bouldin Creek where drainage complicates the base detail.

Every quote breaks out parts and labor separately. You’ll see the Schluter profile cost by the linear foot, the membrane and thinset materials, and the labor rate. The number we write is the number you pay; no change orders unless you ask us to expand the scope mid-job. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the Schluter installation work in writing, and if the repair fails within a year, the second visit is free.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check two things yourself. One: run a finger along the profile edge and see if it moves anywhere. Two: hose the fence-to-tile junction for thirty seconds and watch where water pools. That pooling tells you the base is no longer shedding water the way Schluter’s system intended. What you shouldn’t do is pull the profile, because the anchoring leg is embedded in thinset and the tile edge behind it has no support once you start prying. Most DIY attempts end with three broken tiles and a torn membrane, which roughly doubles the repair cost.

There’s no high-tension or electrical hazard here, but waterproofing a Schluter fence junction correctly means knowing how the profile, membrane, and post base interact. If the post moves even a quarter inch, the profile fails again no matter how well the new one is set. We re-set the post, then install the Schluter pieces. Call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll give you the straight read.
