Wellborn Fence Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Wellborn fence installation in Austin typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a full vinyl fence replacement, with most homeowners paying around $5,500 for a standard backyard perimeter. If a single section or gate has failed, we can often repair or replace just that part for $400 to $1,500 depending on the damage. Most owners discover a Wellborn fence problem the hard way: a post leans after a spring storm, a gate drags against the slab, or a panel cracks at the bottom rail where the weed trimmer has been chewing at it for years.
We stock Wellborn-compatible fence components and install them on existing fence lines throughout Austin. The parts are solid, but the Texas climate punishes vinyl fencing in ways that don’t show up until year six or seven. Heat, UV exposure, and our clay-heavy soil all do their work quietly.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn builds fence through a few distinct lines, and the compatibility story matters more than people expect. The Classic and Premier series share the same 1.5-inch tongue-and-groove pickets but differ in wall thickness: Classic runs .055-inch gauge, Premier runs .065-inch. That thinner Classic profile is precisely why we see more cracked pickets in neighborhoods like Bouldin Creek where yards are tight and mowers are close. The post dimensions are identical across both lines at 5×5 inches, so a replacement post from either series will fit.
The gotcha is the gate hardware. Wellborn changed hinge geometry at the start of 2021 from a face-mount bracket to an internal mortise style. If your fence predates that and the hinge has torn out, you cannot retrofit the new hinge into the old post without adding a structural filler block. We carry both styles. To identify what you have, pull the gate latch and look inside the post: smooth interior walls mean the old face-mount system, a recessed channel means the newer mortise setup. The pickets interlock the same way, so an OEM Wellborn picket slides into place whether the fence is from 2019 or 2024, but the post caps differ between series: Classic caps are flat, Premier caps are domed. Mixing them looks wrong from the street, and if you’re selling a house in Austin, buyers notice.
We’re an independent Austin contractor, not affiliated with Wellborn. What that means for you is we can pull a picket, match it to the exact profile, and offer an aftermarket equivalent that saves money where the material is functionally identical, or recommend OEM where the factory part is the only one that holds tolerance. In practice, aftermarket pickets and rails work fine on both series. Gate hardware, we stick with OEM.

Signs Your Wellborn Fence Installation Is Failing
- Gate sag that keeps returning after hinge adjustment. The culprit is almost always post deflection: a 5×5 vinyl post set in shallow concrete moves in Austin’s clay soil when the ground cycles between wet spring and dry August. Tightening hinges buys weeks, not seasons. The post needs to be reset to a 30-inch depth or the geometry will never stay true.
- Cracked pickets along the bottom rail, clustered on the sunny side. This is UV degradation plus thermal cycling. Vinyl gets stiff as it ages under Texas sun, and a stiff picket hit by a mower deck or a kicked soccer ball cracks instead of flexing. Once one cracks, the load shifts to neighbors, and you see the pattern spread.
- Fence sections leaning together, usually after a rain stretch. The post has lost its bearing in the soil. It’s not the panel; the panel is just along for the ride. In West Austin and the hill country, limestone near the surface means posts go in at shallow depth unless the installer bores through rock, and shallow posts tilt.
- White streaks or a chalky film on the surface. That’s plasticizers escaping on a fence nearing end-of-life. It’s not a cleaning issue. The material has lost its flexibility, and replacing individual pickets will look mismatched against the faded, chalky originals.
- Bottom rail pulling free from the post notch. Vinyl expands and contracts by about 1/8 inch per foot panel over Austin’s temperature swings. When expansion has nowhere to go, the weakest point fails, and that’s the rail notch at the post. We see this on fence runs that butt hard against a house wall or a fence line with no room to move.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Installed Wellborn-compatible fence work in Austin breaks down like this:
- Full backyard fence replacement (150-200 linear feet): $3,500 – $9,000
- Single gate replacement with hardware: $600 – $1,400
- Post reset (one post, includes concrete and haul-off): $400 – $800
- Picket and rail repair (multiple pickets, one section): $300 – $700
- Full front-facing fence with driveway gate: $5,000 – $9,000
What moves the price is linear footage, post condition, and whether we’re digging in soil or punching through limestone. Austin’s west side adds labor hours when the rock shows up two feet down. Every quote includes the written price before work starts, the parts cost separated from labor, and a line item for old fence disposal. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if a post shifts or a gate binds within a year, we come back and fix it without a debate. The Relay Visibility Guarantee applies here too, meaning you get a live arrival time, photo updates while we work, and a digital invoice you pay from a link when the fence is done and you’ve walked the line with us.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check your post depth with a tape measure and a rebar probe, and you can replace a picket if the post is sound and the old one lifts straight out of its channel. No danger there. Snapping pickets back into place is a driveway job. What we’d tell you not to do is reset a post yourself. A 5×5 vinyl post in a hole filled with concrete is a two-person job if you want it plumb, and if the concrete cures out of level, the gate never hangs right. Digging around an Austin gas line without an 811 locate is also a call you don’t want to be the one making. If the problem is a leaning post or a gate that will not stay hung, call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll give you a written price before anything gets cut.
FAQs

A Wellborn vinyl fence in Austin lasts 15 to 22 years, but the gate hardware and the bottom rail connections usually show wear by year 10 or 11. Full Texas sun on an unshaded west-facing line will cut the lifespan to the low end. If your fence is hitting year 15 and you’re chasing individual failures, a full replacement is usually the better money. Call (409) 834-4854 and we’ll tell you honestly which direction makes sense for your yard.
Yes, if the crack is limited to one or two pickets and the surrounding pickets still flex, we can swap the damaged pieces without touching the rest of the fence line. If the panel is chalky and the material has gone stiff, repair just delays a full section replacement by a season. We’ll show you the difference on site before we write the price.
Most full backyard replacements take two to three working days, including old fence haul-off. Single-post resets and gate swaps are usually done in half a day. The wildcard is the dig: if we hit rock, we’re on a rock bar, and that adds hours. We’ll tell you what the soil looks like in your specific part of Austin before we quote.
We keep Classc and Premier pickets, both hinge styles, post caps, and pressure-treated post inners stocked on our Austin trucks. If your specific part isn’t on the truck, we order it and schedule the install when it lands. That means no waiting around for a second visit to figure out what you have: we identify it on the first call, match it, and put a date on the calendar. Call (409) 834-4854 for a free estimate.
If you’ve also got a KraftMaid cabinet run that’s seen better days, a Cambria countertop with a chip, or a Silestone surface that’s lost its factory edge, we handle those too. Same crew, same written price before work starts.
